Frequently Asked Questions

In which applications are plastic TLEDs more suitable?

Consider utilizing plastic TLEDs for specific specialty applications where their unique properties such as lightweight construction, flexibility, and impact resistance offer significant advantages.

  • Correctional institutions
  • Behavioral health centers
  • High-traffic, high-impact areas (warehouses)
  • Food processing
  • Indoor sports, recreation centers, training complexes
  • Schools
  • Hospitals
  • Shopping Centers
  • High occupancy locations

What are the key differences between Glass and Plastic TLEDs?

FeatureGlass TLEDsPlastic TLEDs
Optical ClaritySuperior, high light transmissionLower clarity, potential for yellowing
DurabilityRigid, scratch-resistant, prone to breakageFlexible, impact-resistant, less scratch resistant
WeightHeavier, harder to handle and installLighter, easier to handle
FlexibilityRigidFlexible, prone to sagging if long length
Environmental ResistanceResistant to UV, chemicals, and heatCan degrade under UV, less heat resistant
RecyclabilityEasily recyclableMay have more complex recycling challenges
ApplicationsSuitable for most applications. Require careful handling, more fragileEasier to handle, more robust in installation. Unique properties for specialty applications.

What factors should I consider when selecting the right lighting solution for my facility?

When upgrading from linear fluorescent lighting to LED, there are three options:

  • Replacing the fluorescent lamps with tubular LED (TLED) lamps, which may require alterations to the luminaire.
  • Upgrading the luminaire with a retrofit kit, which retains the existing luminaire but replaces its components with new LED parts.
  • Completely replacing the existing luminaires with new LED luminaires.

TLED replacement lamps are a popular choice, offering 25–40% energy savings and a payback period of 1.8–2.5 years. TLED lamps offer a relatively low-cost option and are typically quicker to install than retrofit kits.

How does luminaire ballast retrofits and conversions affect the luminaire UL listing?

Retrofitting an installed luminaire with an appropriate UL Certified Retrofit Kit does not impact the original luminaire’s Listing.

The UL certification Mark on the retrofit kit indicates that a representative sample of the kit — including its components and the accompanying installation instructions — has been tested and certified against the applicable UL Standard for use with the identified luminaires. It also indicates that when the kit is installed in accordance with its markings and instructions, the converted luminaire complies with the UL Standard for luminaires.

What are shunted and non-shunted lamp holders?

  • Shunted sockets have their electrical contacts internally connected, providing a single track for electrical current to flow. This means that voltage is received through one set of wires and then spreads to two contacts.
  • Non-shunted sockets, on the other hand, have separate contacts for wiring, creating two tracks for electrical current. In this case, voltage is sent to each contact individually through two separate wiring tracks.
  • The type of socket you need is determined by the type of lamp and ballast being used. For example, T8 fluorescent lamps with instant-start ballasts generally use shunted sockets, while T8 lamps with rapid-start, programmed-start, or dimming ballasts typically require non-shunted sockets. LED lamps have their own set of requirements, so always check with the lamp manufacturer or a lighting specialist to confirm the correct socket type. Using the wrong type of socket can create a fire hazard and may void the UL listing of the lamp.

What does it mean for a tube to have an NSF listing? (National Sanitation Foundation)?

NSF/ANSI 2: Food Equipment

NSF/ANSI 2 establishes minimum food protection and sanitation requirements for the materials, design, fabrication, construction and performance of food handling and processing equipment (such as bakery, cafeteria, kitchen and pantry units) and other food handling and processing equipment (such as tables and components, counters, hoods, shelves and sinks).

NSF requires the light fixtures (luminaires) to not be a source of contamination, that they are easy to clean, and that they provide enough light to safely prepare and handle food.

  • EiKO’s NSF LED (glass, coated glass, plastic) tubes are tested to NSF/ANSI 2 requirements.

Shatter-resistant bulbs/lamps are a must to prevent contamination from glass shards or other debris in case of breakage. This aligns with FDA requirements for preventing contamination.
